Carers of the Soul

As kids, we were often told that words are powerful and have meaning.  First words spoken fuel emotion from, “Dada”, making a dad smile to, “No”, allowing a child to feel their first vote of independence and parents to feel a lack of control.

The choice of words used to describe something causes pictures or engenders feelings in the reader or hearer of the words.  When you hear psychologist, psychiatric, mental healthcare, what feelings and pictures well up in you? How about we look at the meanings behind those words and see if they evoke different feelings.

“Psyche” is Greek for one’s life, soul, and essence…the very breath… and when added to “logia” becomes the study of one’s life, soul, and essence. One who offers psychiatric care, according to these words, is care by one trained in helping heal the soul, life, and essence. How does that make you feel?

Today we like to use the words “mental healthcare” to encapsulate what we offer. By definition those two words state “the organized provision of medical care to individuals or a community” in regard to their mind.

So, you find yourself one day overwhelmed, full of fear or full of dread, downtrodden, stressed and you look on the internet for care and you find these words.  Which sounds better?

Words are powerful and have meaning and are not chosen haphazardly. At NVelUp we offer mental healthcare but we really see it as carers of the soul, coming alongside seeking to help with the life essence.
